Phishing emails have been on the rise over the last few years and they remain one of biggest threats you can face online. More and more fake emails are being sent by scammers in an attempt to gain access to personal and financial information.
What is phishing?
Phishing is a type of internet fraud that seeks to acquire a user’s credentials by deception. Messages appear to be authentic communications from legitimate organisations, using the logo and other branding elements of the company they are imitating. Embedded links within the message will direct you to a hoax website where your login or personal details may be requested. Emails may also contain malware attachments which can infect your computer with viruses.
Phishing emails usually pretend to be your bank or a trusted establishment. They often say there’s a problem with your account and ask you to update your details, either by email or by clicking on a link.
Lottery scams are common too – most people have received an email saying they’ve won or been awarded a large amount of money, often in another country.
Recently, phishing emails have taken the form of Apple Music subscriptions, eBay account details and PayPal security alerts. Fake social media posts, comments, messages and requests are also used as bait to try and trick people into clicking links.
Protecting yourself from phishing scams
- Be aware: If you’re unsure about the validity of an email, do not click any links or respond until you have identified it’s genuine. Ensure that the email is from a trusted source and you are, in fact, subscribed to the service.
- Use your spam filter: If you detect a phishing email, mark the message as spam and delete it. This ensures that the message cannot reach your inbox in future.
- Report it: You can report a misleading email or website to Action Fraud – the National Fraud and Cyber Crime Reporting Centre.
