Mobile Working: Securing the Public Sector

Last year’s mobile data traffic was nearly 18 times the size of the entire global internet in 2000, and by 2016, tablets will exceed 15% of global mobile data traffic. But what these statistics fail to highlight is the increasing security risk driven by this astonishing growth in data.

In the past five years recorded incidents of data breaches have increased by 1609% in local government, there are also now over 13,000 thefts of public sector mobile property a year, and as a result organisations are being fined thousands of pounds for breaches in data security. At O2 we recognise the importance of protecting mobile data, and it’s why we have invested heavily in our network to achieve CAS(T) certification for mobile voice and data services. But what does this really mean?

CAS(T) is a security standard defined by her majesty’s government and it means our network is measured against a strict criteria including stringent penetration testing, increased physical security measures on all our network sites and comprehensive checks of all our staff. Connection to O2’s network ensures public sector customers are able to benefit from a ‘pre-assured’ mobile data solution with the highest levels of confidence, further reinforced by our networks CESG approval.

O2 believes mobility is the future of smarter working in the Public Sector and we understand that its vital customers feel confident in hosting confidential data on a tablet or smartphone.
