Hands-free car kits
With the government cracking down on drivers using their mobile phone, now is the time to invest in a hands-free kit for your vehicle.
From the 1st March, people caught using mobile phones or tablets behind the wheel will face fines of £200 and six points on their licence – double the previous penalty.
The changes mean drivers who recently passed their driving test will also risk having their licence revoked.
What is the law?
- It is illegal to drive or ride a motorcycle using handheld phones or similar devices
- The rules are the same if you are stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic
- It is also illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device when supervising a learner driver or rider
The Department for Transport say if you’re the driver, you can only use your phone in a vehicle if you:
- need to call 999 or 112 in an emergency and it’s unsafe or impractical to stop
- are safely parked
Using a hands-free kit or sat-nav is not illegal. However, if this distracts you and affects your ability to drive safely, you can still be prosecuted by the police.
Mobile devices must be secured in a holder out of the 45-degree angle of the driver’s view – and you can’t touch it while driving. The same applies for sat-navs.
